NAEYC renews Accreditation for Opportunity School!

Opportunity School has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)—the world's largest organization working on behalf of young children.

“We are thrilled to continue a strong tradition of excellence at Opportunity School for high quality in early childhood education for the littlest learners. We have an incredible team of teachers who work hard every day on behalf of children and their families,” said Jill Goodrich, Executive Director. “We could not do this without the faithful and continued support of the Amarillo community who invests in children.”

Opportunity School was among the first 200 programs in the United States to achieve accreditation in 1986, when NAEYC launched the accreditation program.  The school has continually maintained accreditation status ever since then. NAEYC Accreditation is a rigorous quality-improvement system that uses a set of 10 research-based standards to collaborate with early education programs to recognize and drive quality-improvement in high-quality early learning environments.

“There are only two NAEYC-accredited programs in Amarillo: Opportunity School and AC’s Learning Lab. Opportunity School’s generous donors, board members, teachers and staff have faithfully worked to assure that this type of high-quality program is available in Amarillo for the kids whose families need it the most”, said Vicki Wilmarth, President of Opportunity School’s Board of Trustees.

To earn NAEYC Accreditation, Opportunity School went through a regular quality-improvement process, annual reports, self-evaluations, followed by an on-site visit in February by NAEYC Assessors to verify and ensure that the program met each of the ten program standards.  Opportunity School was evaluated on nearly 400 different quality criteria.  NAEYC-accredited programs are always prepared for unannounced quality-assurance visits during their accreditation term, which lasts for five years.

In the 30 years since NAEYC Accreditation was established, it has become a widely recognized sign of high-quality early childhood education. Less than 10 percent of all child care centers, preschools, and kindergartens nationally achieve this recognition by NAEYC.

“We are so happy that NAEYC has confirmed what we have always known—that for almost 50 years, Opportunity School has provided great beginnings to Amarillo’s children,” said Vicki Wilmarth.
