To:                   All Opportunity School Families
From:              Jill Goodrich, Executive Director

Subject:           School Re-Opening

Thank you so much for your patience with this very challenging situation. I wanted to provide an update based on the decisions about Opportunity School’s reopening based on decisions finalized by the school’s Board of Directors today.

Because we have been closed since March 23 and COVID-19 cases in Amarillo have not yet begun to go down, the Board has approved a phased re-opening that allows our teachers and staff to prepare for new and enhanced safety practices and our families be assured that the school is ready to receive their children. The Board had decided on a “soft reopening” which will mean limitations for children returning when we reopen on May 28.

Here are the details you should know:

Soft Re-Opening:
Staff will come back on May 26 & 27 (Tuesday and Wednesday) in staggered shifts to prepare classrooms and plan for new procedures. All staff are required to do enhanced training on health and safety practices and our Food Service Manager will review food safety and meal serving procedures.  Children will return Thursday and Friday (May 28 & 29) for next week.

Returning Families:
From May 28 through June 12, returning children will be limited to those of Essential Workers based on the attestation form from Child Care Licensing. Even though this provision has been lifted by Gov. Abbott, we will be using this as the basis for our soft re-opening. After June 12, additional families will be allowed to return as long as we are able to remain within the group size and ratio limits set by the Governor’s Emergency Order.

Summer Hours of Operation:
In order to allow for the new practices and enhanced cleaning requirements, our operating hours 8 am – 5 pm for children.  We will ask all parents to pick up children at the earliest time possible but no later than 5 pm. All children must be present by 9 am. No children will be allowed to come after 9 am. We will look at resuming normal hours in August.

Policies and Procedures to Keep Everyone Safe:
Each family and staff member will receive a copy of our Reopening Policies and Procedures and will be asked to sign an acknowledgement of receiving these policies. Some of the new requirements include:

  • Daily temperature taking and health screening for all students and staff.
  • Drop off at the front door, no one allowed beyond the entryway.
  • We will monitor drop off and pick up and may have to stagger parents.
  • Families will be asked to sign a waiver.
  • Parents should call when they arrive for pick-up and child will be brought to the door.
  • Low ratios (no more than 10 per classroom through June 12 with consistent teachers during the day. No co-mingling of children throughout the day.
  • Staff will bring in lunch to eliminate traffic out and into the building throughout the day.
  • Enhanced cleaning practices and frequent handwashing throughout the day.
  • Custodial staff will use our hospital-grade surface cleaners and sanitizers for final cleaning at the end of the day.

Attached is a a copy of the details of our plans to protect our teachers, staff and families and keep everyone safe.  Re-Opening COVID-19 Practices and Procedures.pdf

Fees:
Fees will resume immediately for enrolled families who return next week. For families who are enrolled but not returning yet, fees will be suspended through June 12. After that date, if a family would like to guarantee their spot for a later return, they will need to pay their fee or will un-enroll and be placed on the waitlist based on the date they un-enrolled. Families on the waitlist will be enrolled for fall on a first come, first serve basis.

We understand that this schedule may create additional challenges for families. We know that being without childcare is difficult for working parents. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we re-open our center carefully and responsibly.
