Opportunity School is Growing

Will you help us complete the goal?

Opportunity School is in the midst of a capital campaign to build a new campus at SE 3rd Avenue and Ross Street. Upon completion, it will take the place of the current Grand Street Campus and provide room to grow. We have met nearly 90% of our $4.5M goal.

This expansion will allow Opportunity School to double the number of children served at Grand Street. At the same time, Opportunity School will continue to serve children at its Central Campus based within First Presbyterian Church.

Families Need More Options for Early Learning and Care

The families we serve know first-hand the difference that Opportunity School has made to over 4,000 children in our community for the past 50 years.

A recent study conducted by WTAMU has confirmed the impact of Opportunity School on former students who are now 18 years or older.  What we learned was that investing in Opportunity School pays off for our community.

  • Former students and their parents believed that Opportunity School had a strong influence on their school success.
  • All of the students contacted had finished High School or gained their GED.
  • 94% had at least some college or vocational education after high school compared to 83.5% for Amarillo in general.
  • 32% received a bachelor’s degree or higher compared to 22.3% for Amarillo in general.CASE FOR SUPPORT revised 11.19.2019.docx

Unfortunately, for many of our low-income families, there continues to be limited availability in Amarillo’s early learning and childcare centers. The need for more spaces within affordable, quality programs is a call to action!

Opportunity School’s Solution

The Opportunity School Board of Directors has diligently examined the best solution to expand services in Amarillo. The current Grand Street Campus location is not a workable solution long-term and does not provide room for expansion.  In January 2018, a suitable site was found near the intersections of SE 3rd Avenue and Ross Street. The land has been secured and paid through the Opportunity School’s Board Directed Agency Fund. The new campus will cost $4.5 million to construct.

More than $3.9 million has already been committed to this project through generous donations from Foundations, Businesses, and Individuals. In December 2019, we received a challenge grant from an anonymous foundation for $300,000 with the caveat that our $4.5 million goal be reached by July 1, 2020!

Please consider a gift towards Opportunity School’s capital campaign expansion project to help more children move out of poverty and grow up to become stable, contributing adults in our Amarillo community and beyond.
