Central Campus

Providing Full-Day, Year-Round Learning & Care

Commonly called the Central Campus for its central location adjacent to downtown Amarillo, this is where the vision of Opportunity School first began. The school was started by a Sunday School class at First Presbyterian Church in 1969 and shares classroom space with FPC Kids Ministry. The entrance is located on the South side of the church facing 12th Street between Harrison and Van Buren Street. There is an Opportunity School doorbell at the church doors. Please feel free to call (806) 373-4245 to schedule a tour.

Opportunity School's Central Campus has been nationally accredited since 1986 by the National Association for the education of Young Children (NAEYC) which is the gold standard for quality early childhood education programs. The NAEYC website contains great resources for families. Our National Accreditation was renewed in March 2018.

The Central Campus features full-day, year-round classes for preschool students within First Presbyterian Church. We also have two 0-3 classrooms in partnership with the Downtown Women's Center. Daily meal service is provided for breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack prepared by our Opportunity School Chef Felicha and her team. They prepare home-cooked meals at our Edwards location for all the children in our program. Our menus are designed to meet the dietary needs of all of our children in partnership with the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

Limited bus transportation is provided within a certain distance and area around the school if we have enough families sign up. We also have a full-time early intervention specialist on staff to work with children who need extra help with language and vocabulary, and behavioral or developmental delays. We can help families connect with other therapies as needed.

In 2016, we added infants and toddlers (0-3 years) with a collaboration called Opportunity School at Gratitude House for the children of Gratitude House residents in partnership with the Downtown Women's Center and Early Head Start. We have two classrooms housed within Gratitude House across the street from the school.

Eighty percent of our brain is wired by the time we turn 3 years old so we are grateful for this partnership with families to provide learning and care to our youngest students to help them receive the best start possible. We know that good beginnings never end when we start early.

Enrollment is open to all with preference given to low-income families. Open enrollment is ongoing as slots become available. Opportunity School does not discriminate in enrollment because of race, gender, ethnicity, national origin, political belief, religion, or disability.
