Outdoor Play Gives Young Children a Powerful Start in Life

In a world increasingly dominated by screens and structured schedules, Opportunity School of Amarillo is reminding parents, educators, and communities of one simple but powerful truth: outdoor play is essential for young children’s healthy growth and development.

From climbing and running to exploring nature and imaginative play, time spent outdoors supports nearly every aspect of early childhood development.

“Outdoor play is much more than recreation,” says Opportunity School Executive Director Jill Goodrich. “It helps children build confidence, creativity, resilience, and critical social skills, all while encouraging healthy movement and curiosity.”

Studies have linked regular outdoor play to improved motor skills, stronger immune systems, reduced stress and anxiety, better sleep, and increased attention spans. Outdoor environments also encourage children to engage in open-ended play, problem-solving, and collaboration with peers.

“For young children especially, unstructured outdoor time provides opportunities to learn through direct experience, “ explains Goodrich. “Whether splashing in puddles, building forts, or observing insects and plants, outdoor exploration stimulates imagination and supports early learning in meaningful ways.”

Goodrich says children don’t need elaborate playgrounds or expensive equipment, just the freedom to move, explore, imagine, and connect with the world around them.

“Any outdoor play in any capacity proves beneficial in helping strengthen children physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively, laying the foundation for lifelong well-being,” says Goodrich.

At Opportunity School, the impact of outdoor play is seen every day through its Certified Outdoor Classrooms, where students benefit firsthand from increased confidence, creativity, social development, and hands-on learning experiences that help them grow and thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
